Exploring AI for Disaster Management: Building on Lessons from Wildlife Relief
📅 Date: Thursday, January 30
⏰ Time: 6:00 PM PT
📍 Location: Virtual
In the wake of the devastating wildfires that have impacted Los Angeles this past month, our community has expressed a growing interest in how AI can assist not only in disaster prevention but also in relief and recovery efforts. We were inspired by last week’s AI Policy Mixer for Wildlife Relief, where we discussed ideas like using AI to help people rebuild and get back on their feet, whether it's using AI to detect property managers engaging in price-gouging or to map out wildfire spread patterns in nearby areas.
For this special session of the Responsible AI Reading Group, we’re inviting participants to contribute articles, research, or papers they’ve encountered that explore the use of AI in disaster prevention, relief, and emergency management. Our discussion will consider these tools from multiple perspectives, including but not limited to:
Sustainability and Ecology: Addressing environmental recovery and resilience.
Construction and Infrastructure: Strengthening buildings and communities against future disasters.
Insurance and Financial Services: Supporting fair and efficient recovery processes for affected individuals and businesses.
Logistics and Supply Chain: Ensuring smooth delivery of essential resources in times of crisis.
This session will feature a collaborative format where everyone has the chance to briefly share their findings and insights. All materials will be compiled on the sheet you can access here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UyZw4AKtinnIBQRg5JFg-sm0rTTObls8O-s1idI_RVc/edit?usp=sharing.
Together, we’ll brainstorm the potential for AI-driven solutions to improve outcomes in these tragic situations, pooling ideas from our diverse perspectives and professional expertise.
Join us as we explore how AI can be a powerful ally in creating a safer, more resilient future for all. We look forward to seeing you there!
